How widespread is certification or hiring fraud?
There is not a single universal fraud rate for certifications, but the broader hiring fraud signal is significant. Recent employer screening research shows that many businesses uncover candidate discrepancies during screening, and identity fraud in hiring is a growing concern. That is one reason employers increasingly want direct credential verification instead of relying only on resumes or static documents.

Why should employers verify certifications if they already run background checks?
A background check does not always confirm whether a certification is current, valid, suspended, revoked, or expired. Certifications are often time-limited and may require renewal or continuing education. Verification helps employers confirm the live status and scope of a credential, not just whether a candidate listed it on a resume.

What should an employer verify besides whether a certification exists?
At minimum, employers should verify the issuing body, the credential name, the date earned, the expiration or renewal status, the scope or specialty, and whether the issuer provides accreditation or verifiable evidence. Are digital badges actually credible?
They can be credible when they are standards-based, issuer-backed, and include verification metadata. A digital badge is more useful when it links to the issuer, the award criteria, the issue date, and the current status of the credential. A badge without verifiable backing is much less useful than one tied to an established standard and issuer.

How many different certification bodies are there?

In the United States alone, there are thousands of certifications and a very large number of credential providers. What is the difference between a certificate and a certification?
A certificate usually shows that you completed a course, training, or program. A certification typically means you met a defined professional standard through an assessment process and may need to maintain that status over time. In other words, certificates often document completion, while certifications usually attest to competency against an established benchmark.
